Hadassah Medical Organization Names New Director General
JERUSALEM—Esti Dominissini, Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Hadassah Medical Organization announced today in Jerusalem that Avigdor Kaplan will serve as the distinguished medical center's ninth Director General. Kaplan, 73, was chosen unanimously from a large field of candidates by the Hadassah Medical Organization's Board of Directors.
Kaplan is well-known to the Israeli public for steering Clalit Health Fund, Israel's largest health fund, from deficit to financial solvency and building Clal Insurance Enterprises, which he joined in 1997, into the nation's largest insurance company.
Marcie Natan, National President of Hadassah, the Women's Zionist Organization of America, which founded the Hadassah Medical Organization and continues to support its research and development, said, "The 330,000 members, Associates and supporters of Hadassah in the United States and Hadassah-International around the world are gratified that a world-renowned manager will be leading the Hadassah Medical Organization at a time when strong managerial skills are necessary to maximize the impact of advanced medicine. We welcome Avigdor Kaplan as the ninth director general of HMO and know that he will provide the leadership for our superb staff."
Kaplan is the first non-physician to assume the leadership of the Hadassah Medical Organization, which includes Hadassah University Hospital Ein Kerem, Hadassah University Hospital Mount Scopus, and a partnership with The Hebrew University in the schools of medicine, nursing, dentistry, occupational therapy and public health. A senior physician will be appointed as Chief Medical Officer to complement Professor Kaplan's expertise in management.

Professor Kaplan, one of five children, grew up in Zichron Yaakov, and during high school traveled daily to Hadera so that he would acquire a matriculation certificate. He served in the Communications Corps of the Israel Defense Forces.
Kaplan received a bachelor's degree in economics and statistics and a master's in business administration from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He holds a Master of Science degree in Industrial Management Engineering from the Technion Institute of Technology in Haifa. He earned a doctoral degree in Medical Administration from Ben Gurion University.
To take up the position, he has resigned as Chairman of the Board of Clal Insurance, Pensions and Finance Group, where he served previously as President and Chief Executive Officer. He also heads the MBA Program in Risk Management at the University of Haifa, where he is a professor.
Kaplan has earned a reputation as a gifted executive who nurtures the strengths of the major corporations he heads. He will assume his leadership role at a time when PricewaterhouseCoopers and its local affiliate Kesselman and Kesselman are completing their recommendations for restructuring and improved efficiency at the Hadassah Medical Organization.

Professor Kaplan served as the Managing Director and General Manager at Clal Insurance Enterprises Holdings Ltd., and served as its Chief Executive Officer from 1997 to March 21, 2008. From 1992 to 1997, he served as a Director General of Clalit Health Fund. He was also the Deputy Chief Executive Officer at Israel Aircraft Industries and has been the Chief Executive Officer, Vice President of Human Resources and Administration, and Vice President of Planning and Information Systems at Israel Aircraft Industries' U.S. subsidiary. Kaplan has served and currently serves as Chairman and Director on numerous business and philanthropic boards. Among them: Chair of the Board of Company for the Development of Cancer Cures and Rheumatic Disease, Chair of Can-Fite BioPharma, and Chair of the advisory committee of Agate Medical Investments LP.
He will assume the role of Director General in the coming weeks.
